  • Q: How long has the website been going?

A: The website has been going for approx 7 years.

  • Q: Who started the DBA site?

A: The founder was Lynette Williams who at the time ran a large, successful Interior design Practice and could not found easily Qualified designers to work in the practice. The only way of finding staff was word of mouth, expensive advertisements, or very expensive recruitment agencies.

A: Over the 7 years DBA has given out 20,000 leaflets through trade representatives, stand at Decorex, mailing and delivering to businesses. DBA has also advertised frequently in House and Garden magazine, BIDA magazine before it changed its name to BIID, and other trade magazines.

  • Q: Why should I Advertise my Vacancy or CV with DBA?

A: The site is aimed directly at interior designers and the fashion industry and retail this is a specific sector that we understand and promote in. Many other sites are for all trades and with no background in the industry they are advertising.

  • Q: Are candidate details revealed to businesses?

A: Candidate's details are not disclosed by this website. Businesses that have jobs currently advertised can contact candidates who have CVs on display by email, but they do not see their details.

A: DBA is not a recruitment business ,it is an online notice board for the design and retail world internationally.

  • A true story:

The Founder of DBA had a bad experience with a large UK recruitment agency. I have used several recruitment agencies over the years without success. This is one of my stories.

I used a large well known PLC who covers all professions in UK and abroad who have offices spread around the country. I required an accounts person. They put my vacancy onto their site and candidates replied to them via the internet and sent their cvs. They then sent these onto me via the internet, I then requested interviews thinking these people had been interviewed and vetted in some way by the agency's local office (this was implied to me when they visited my office to take details of the job )I later took a person on. This person then left approximately 3 weeks after the 3 month period, the months being the period before you pay, that the person has become permanent. The accounts person left approximately 10 days after the 3 months period.

After the person left, I asked for the help of my accounts they checked the work that had been done and basically she was not competent at the job. I spent approximately £10,000 to undo all the 3 months work and redo.

The agency now wanted paying I told them what had happened and that due to the cost of undoing all the work that they had told me she was competent I wanted to agree a reduced fee. They said no, and took me to court. I lost as the judge said hard luck you had a dud, the agency had not checked or tested or even interviewed her face to face and they had no obligation to do so said the Judge.

With the cost of the accountants and losing in court the whole episode cost me approximately £25,000 and a lot of heartache. These companies have a huge amount of terms and conditions making sure that they are liable for nothing including, interviewing face to face the person they are sending you. Their terms are sent to you on your computer every time you pick a cv to interview these terms are very long and have been written over the years to make it advantageous to them and not you. After the judge said the agency had no obligation to check candidates I thought all they are doing is advertising and sending out cv then charging 15%- 25% of the salary, you do all the work and interviewing in which case they are not required as this can be done at a low cost by your company on sites like DBA. As accountancy was not my businesses I relied on them for verifying the candidates.
